Food Systems Mapping

Executive Summary: From May 2020- March 2021, over 250 stakeholders participated in the creation of the Hawaiʻi Food System Map. This System Map is a visual representation of how our food system works. Systems mapping is a way of showing complex relationships, and interdependencies allowing us to identify leverage points or opportunities for collective action. Understanding the complexities of our food system, and where small-scale investments can have out-sized impacts can drive catalytic changes.

As proof of the widespread and growing interest in Hawaiʻiʻs food system, Over
250 stakeholders participated in the creation of this food system map through a dozen virtual engagements.

Three leverage points or places in the system have been identified where small-scale investments can have out-sized impacts that can drive catalytic changes:

  1. Capital flows to the local food system;
  2. Policies for local resilience; and
  3. Local processing, packing, storage, and distribution

Our Guiding Star: Hawai’i’s food system drives community wellbeing, economic vibrancy, and ecological resilience.

Our North Star: Local food is the healthy, accessible and affordable choice for Hawai’i communities.
