Right to Food Amendment
We invite your support for a historic effort: advancing a Right to Food amendment in the Honolulu City Charter. This proposal would enshrine every resident’s right to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.
This would be the first municipal Right to Food amendment in the country, positioning Honolulu as a leader in resilience, justice, and innovation. With Oʻahu as Hawaiʻi’s largest port and population center, the City and County of Honolulu has a responsibility not only to its own residents but to all residents of Hawai’i’s that depend on the resiliency of our food system.
We believe this initiative can:
- Strengthen local food sovereignty and cultural foodways.
- Improving health outcomes through Food is Medicine principles.
- Build disaster resilience in our communities.
- Generate statewide momentum and serve as a model for progressive food policy across Hawaiʻi, the Continent, and the Pacific.
We are seeking organizations and individuals to submit the proposal on behalf of your organization or as an individual. The deadline is November 7th. Submission form found here
Whether you choose to submit the proposal above, revise it to reflect your priorities, or submit complementary language, your participation will demonstrate broad community momentum behind this idea.
